Atmiya and Brahmo Sabha
The Atmiya Sabha was established by Raja Ram Mohan Roy. Later this organization was renamed as Brahmo Sabha in 1828. The aim of the movement was to promote monotheism in Hinduism, to discourage idol worship and to bring about social reform. The Brahmo Sabha later evolved into the Brahmo Samaj, which is still active today and has branches in India and Bangladesh.
The Brahmo Samaj believes in the existence of one God, the fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and the moral and spiritual development of humanity. They reject the authority of any particular scripture or religious leader, and emphasize the importance of individual conscience and reason in religious matters.
The Brahmo Samaj has been an important influence on the development of modern Hinduism, as well as on the Indian independence movement. It played a key role in the social reform movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the abolition of sati, the promotion of women’s rights, and the elimination of caste discrimination.
