  1. Appointment:  The Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha is appointed by the Speaker of the House. The Deputy Speaker is usually a senior member of the House, who is elected by the members of the House.
  2. Role of the Deputy Speaker:  The Deputy Speaker performs several important roles in the Lok Sabha. The Deputy Speaker presides over the House when the Speaker is absent. The Deputy Speaker also maintains order and decorum in the House, and ensures that the rules and procedures of the House are followed.

  • Regulating the duration of speeches and debates

Powers of the Deputy Speaker:  The Deputy Speaker has certain powers that enable them to carry out their duties effectively. These include the power to:

  • Take disciplinary action against Members who disrupt the proceedings of the House
  • Rule on points of order and questions of privilege raised by Members
