First Famine Commission
The commission was appointed after a severe famine had occurred in the Deccan region of India in 1876-77, which had led to the deaths of millions of people. The commission conducted a detailed study of the causes and effects of famines in India and made several recommendations to prevent them in the future.
Sir Richard Strachey was a British geographer, geologist and member of the Indian Civil Service. He served as the Chairman of the First Famine Commission in 1880, which was established to investigate the causes and effects of famines in India and to make recommendations to prevent them in the future.
One of the key recommendations was the establishment of a permanent system of relief and prevention of famines, which led to the creation of the Famine Code in 1883. The Famine Code provided guidelines for the prevention and relief of famines and formed the basis of the government’s policy towards famines in India for many years.
