Black Soil: Also called Regur soil. These soils develop in the semi-arid condition hence suitable for cultivation of deep route crops. These soils have ‘high water retentive capacity’, Hence suitable for cultivation of Cotton. The cultivation of sugarcane is also done with the aid of irrigation facility. In India they are mainly found in Deccan Plateau.
Black soils are rich in lime, iron, magnesia and alumina. They also contain potash. But they lack in phosphorus, nitrogen and organic matter.
Black soil is important for climate change mitigation: Soils remove carbon from the atmosphere and lock it up in soil organic matter (called carbon sequestration).
