Most Prestigious Central Exams
- Engineering Services Examination (ESE/IES)
Conducted by the UPSC, this is considered the most elite exam for engineers. Successful candidates are recruited as Group A Gazetted Officers in departments such as Indian Railways, CPWD, and Military Engineer Services (MES). - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
While GATE is also used for higher studies, a high GATE score is the primary gateway for direct recruitment into top PSUs, including Maharatna and Navratna companies like NTPC, BHEL, PGCIL, and ONGC.
Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)
PSUs recruit engineers through two main routes:
- Through GATE
Organizations such as NTPC, PowerGrid (PGCIL), IOCL, and GAIL shortlist candidates based on GATE scores. - Independent Exams
Some PSUs conduct their own entrance tests. Notable examples include:
Railway & SSC Engineering Roles

Conducted by the Railway Recruitment Board, these exams focus on technical roles within the Indian Railways.
