The development of healthy baby free from genetic disorders and to terminate the lethal mitochondrial disorders are the chief motive of this technique.

In nearly all mammals, this mitochondrial genome is inherited exclusively from the mother, and transmission of paternal mitochondria or mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) has not been convincingly demonstrated in humans. Hence both statements 1 and 2 are correct.

#91. Bollgard I and Bollgard II technologies are mentioned in the context of

Ans: (B)

Explanation: Bollgard I Bt cotton (single-gene technology) is India’s first biotech crop technology approved for commercialization in India in 2002.

Bollgard cotton provides in-built protection for cotton against destructive American Bollworm Heliothis Armigera infestations, and contains an insecticidal protein from a naturally occurring soil microorganism, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).

#92. In a pressure cooker, the temperature at which the food is cooked depends mainly upon which of the following?

1. Area of the hole in the lid

2. Temperature of the flame

3. Weight of the lid

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

Ans: (C)

Solution: Inside a pressure cooker the boiling point is increased by increasing the pressure. Hence cooking is faster.

The lid dictates the pressure level, heavier the lid, higher will be pressure inside the pressure cooker. Hence, Statement 3 is correct.

Again, Force = Pressure X Area

Hence, Smaller the hole in the lid, greater will be the pressure inside the cooker. Hence Statement 1 is correct.

The temperature at which food is cooked is affected by the pressure and not temperature of the flame. Hence Statement 2 is Incorrect.

#93. At the national level, which ministry is nodal agency to ensure effective implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006?

Explanation:

Forest Rights Act, 2006

  • The Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006 recognizes the rights of the forest dwelling tribal communities and other traditional forest dwellers to forest resources, on which these communities were dependent for a variety of needs, including livelihood, habitation and other socio-cultural needs. The forest management policies, including the Acts, Rules and Forest Policies of Participatory Forest Management policies in both colonial and post-colonial India, did not, till the enactment of this Act, recognize the symbiotic relationship of the STs with the forests, reflected in their dependence on the forest as well as in their traditional wisdom regarding conservation of the forests.
  • The Ministry of the Central Government dealing with Tribal Affairs or any officer or authority authorised by the Central Government on this behalf shall be the nodal agency for the implementation of the provisions of this Act. Hence, option (d) is correct.

#94. A legislation which confers on the executive or administrative authority an unguided and uncontrolled discretionary power in the matter of application of law violates which one of the following articles of the Constitution of India?

Explanation:

  • The court exercises control over delegation of discretionary powers to the administration by adjudicating upon the constitutionality of the law under which such powers are delegated with reference to the fundamental rights enunciated in Part III of the Indian Constitution. Therefore, if the law confers vague and wide discretionary power on any administrative authority, it may be declared ultra vires Article 14, Article 19 and other provisions of the Constitution.
  • Article 14 of the Constitution guarantees equality before law but the courts have permitted reasonable classification to be made. Where the law is valid under the article, a discriminatory action would still be violative of the equality clause.
  • Hence, option (a) is correct.
  • Also, by elimination, Art. 28, and Art.44 are unrelated to the question and Art. 44 is to protect the FR of the citizens.

#95. With reference to India, consider the following statements:

1. There is only ‘one citizenship and one domicile’.

2. A citizen by birth only can become the Head of State.

3. A foreigner once granted the citizenship cannot be deprived of it under any circumstances.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Ans: (a)

Explanation:

S1: Yes, there is single citizenship in India. A person can not call himself the citizen of India and Jharkhand. This is the case in USA.

S2: No, a citizen whether by birth or by naturalization can become the Head of the State i.e. the President of India.

S3: No, the home ministry can terminate the citizenship of the foreigner in case he/she gets convicted and sent to jail for 2 years or more.

#96. With reference to India, consider the following statements:

1. When a prisoner makes out a sufficient case, parole cannot be denied to such prisoner because it becomes a matter of his/her right.

2. State Governments have their own Prisoners Release on Parole Rules.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Ans: (b)

Explanation:

S1: The provision of Parole is a privilege/concession but not a right of any convicted prisoner. Hence, statement 1 is incorrect.

S2: States have separate prison/parole rules because “prison and persons detained” is a state subject of the 7th schedule. So, statement 2 is correct.

#97. Consider the following:

1. Bacteria

2. Fungi

3. Virus

Which of the above can be cultured in artificial/synthetic medium?

Ans: (A)

Solution: Microbes like bacteria and many fungi can be grown on nutritive media to form colonies that can be seen with the naked eyes. Such cultures are useful in studies on micro-organisms.

Unlike bacteria, many of which can be grown on an artificial nutrient medium, viruses require a living host cell for replication.

#98. Consider the following statements:

1. Adenoviruses have single-stranded DNA genomes whereas retroviruses have double-stranded DNA genomes.

2. Common cold is sometime caused by an adenovirus whereas AIDS is caused by a retrovirus.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Ans: (B)

Solution:

An adenovirus is a non-enveloped virus, meaning it has no protective coating. A retrovirus is an example of an enveloped virus, making it more resilient and causes higher tendency of infection or diseases.

Adenoviruses have double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) genome. Hence, S1 is incorrect.

Adenoviruses are common viruses that cause a range of illness. They can cause cold-like symptoms, fever, sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia, diarrhea, and pink eye (conjunctivitis).

HIV is called a retrovirus because it works in a back-to-front way. Unlike other viruses, retroviruses store their genetic information using RNA instead of DNA, meaning they need to ‘make’ DNA when they enter a human cell in order to make new copies of themselves. Hence S2 is correct.

#99. Consider the following statements:

1. ‘Right to the City’ is an agreed human right and the UN-Habitat monitors the commitments made by each country in this regard.

2. ‘Right to the City’ gives every occupant of the city the right to reclaim public spaces and public participation in the city.

3. ‘Right to the City’ means that the State cannot deny any public service or facility to the unauthorized colonies in the city.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Ans: (C)

Solution: ‘Right to the City’ is an agreed human right. The Right to the City is the right of all inhabitants, present and future, to occupy, use, and produce just, inclusive, and sustainable cities, defined as a common good essential to the quality of life.

Also, the UN-Habitat monitors the commitments made by each country in this regard. Hence statement 1 is correct.

Right to the city means right to reclaim public spaces, public participation in the city and more importantly right to housing and basic amenities. Hence statement 2 is correct.

Here, the State can deny any public service or facility to the unauthorized colonies in the city. Hence statement 3 is not correct.

#100. With reference to India, consider the following statements:

1. Judicial custody means an accused is in the custody of the concerned magistrate and such accused is locked up in police station, not in jail.

2. During judicial custody, the police officer in charge of the case is not allowed to interrogate the suspect without the approval of the court.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Ans: (B)

Explanation:

Statement 1: Police Custody means that police have the physical custody of the accused while Judicial Custody means an accused is in the custody of the concerned Magistrate. In the former, the accused is lodged in a police station lockup while in latter, it is the jail. So, statement 1 is incorrect.

Statement 2: During Judicial Custody, the police officer in charge of the case is not allowed to interrogate the suspect. So, statement 2 is correct.
